"Accept the fact that he is no longer young" is a subjective need -- but not an objective goal. Why does he need to face reality? What's at stake -- to be gained if he matures, to be lost if he doesn't?
This sounds more character than plot.
1)
Why is it affecting him now ??
What is the incident that has triggered this.
2)
What is Ernie battling for to overcome his flaw ??
3)
What is he risking to not be seen as old ??
Hope this helps :D
