I don't understand the sense of "set" in this sentence.

Who is the protagonist and what are they trying to do?

It may be my ignorance talking, but I dont get what the background has to do with anything. The journalist could be running arond Nepal for a number of reasons. Why is the coverage of an assasination such a big deal in that world and have such an impact on their love affair.
