The alien is slowly taking more control. The clumsy neurosurgeon can now take a gamble and literally choose to operate his own brain to get rid of the symbian, 'killing' his chances of fame and/or himself but if the operation is successful - saving his soul. Did you miss a word? Operate on himself? Or is it a hint that the Alien is controlling him?

Plus Clumsy I find strange. Perhaps it works really effectively in the story, but Neurosurgery is the one job that tends to weed out the clumsy.
