There doesn't give us much here regarding stakes and reasons. Has he got to enter the tournament to win as he has spent all his loan? Could his friends be pivotal for his gaming style and has to pick them up, only they live on opposite sides of the country? So far the line tells us the a student is driving to a tournament and will meet people as he goes, we need to know more really.
