What "unforeseen event"? Given that it appears to be the inciting incident, there's no need to be so vague. How does this incident involve the maid? "When (incident involving the maid happens), she must (action she takes), reexamining the strict Indian caste system, her past relationships, and her own beliefs in order to find her place within her own family" might be an option to consider.
