The main goal of Santiago is to become a better man, but his own demons, fueled the devastated context, keeps bringing him down. He lacks self-awareness, and is not until halfway of the story that he realizes that he's gonna lose his chance in life if he doesn't step up. But maybe his chances are already gone?

What is the main goal of the protagonist, and what is standing in his way?
