    Agreed with DPG.The story seems to start after she is fired - this is her inciting incident. You could make her resulting goal to get her job back and her motivation to save the haunted boy.

    Agreed with Richiev and DPG, reflecting on its own is not an action fit for a film, the MC needs to pursue a specific outer goal. Could the grandmother want to break with tradition and fight for survival on her own?

    Or if you prefer to pursue a fictional character and story line than I suggest he not just be an Iraqi vet — but a decorated vet, one who served with valor and distinction. ?This instantly makes him a more sympathetic character.
